Carrie Underwood magazine representations
cover one - relatable , nice , chill.
cover two - bold , powerful , independent.
cover three - pretty , sweet , happy.
In this magazine cover Carrie Underwood looks young , pretty and caring as shown by the dog in her arms and the casual outfit she is wearing.
Differences between Cosmopolitan and GQ magazine
- colour schemes
- fonts for text - ( thicker for Cosmopolitan and thinner longer text for GQ)
- medium long shot versus a mid shot.
- poses ( hand on hip and hands held together.)
- heavy use of shade in GQ.
- use of stereotypical colours in each.
-topic of cover lines - weight loss to football.
- male on one ,female on other
where the cover lines are located.
In the Cosmopolitan magazine, women have been portrayed as beautiful through the use of the full body shot and the colour scheme they have used - pinks, purples and black and white. The thicker text emphasises the details of her appearance and the cover lines talk about weight gain and boys. her pose indicates confidence and beauty and she is shown to be happy through her smile and the bright overall tone of the cover. This may create the idea that women are interested in body image and how they look.
For GQ magazine men have been portrayed as independent through David Beckhams confident pose ( hands held together and a smirk) and the use of shading that darken the image. The text is thinner as the image is closer up and fills most of the screen. The colour scheme of blue, gray and white contrast to the lighter colours used in the Cosmopolitan magazine. This may be used to draw in either gender as blue is considered a boys colour and pink a girls colour. The topic of the cover lines are about football and exercise which may draw in their readers.
The left hand on top of the right shows off the wedding ring on his finger and the tattoos on his palm. The ring symbolises loyalty and marriage and the tattoos and the trimmed beard suggest superiority. His tuxedo emphasises the powerful , formal representation of the man.

- the men have been represented different to the norm stereotype - look warm and approachable in a feminine way.
- The cover lines in Cosmo talk about feelings and gossip - the deepfake rumour.
- The colours on cosmo - pink, yellow - are stereotypically female as well as his posture.
- the GQ magazine has stereotypically masculine colours - darker greens, red and yellows as well as grey.
- Rihanna has been sexually objectified through the nudity and pose with her hands clasped on her face.

Style : Block Capitals or lowercase , colour and italics or bold.
The magazine uses big block capitals to emphasise the masculinity with sans serif as their font to give off a modern touch. The masthead is grey but the other cover lines are white for a dark minimalistic feel. The red shorts add a pop of colour to interest the readers as it contrasts against the gloomier colours. This design is for the mainly male audience in their thirties or forties.
Colour Pallet
The colour pallet used in my magazine are white and grey in the background for a dark chic feel. This modern touch stands out against the pink shorts which are anti stereotypical for GQ. The pink shows that GQ is going against this masculine stereotype when paired with the darker colours.
Layout
In my magazine they have used a z shape to entrance the users in how we naturally read. Going from the top left down from left to right.
Anchorage Text
' The Relentless Jeremy strong' can show his strength and masculinity as well as his mental determination to act in films and shows.
Image
The medium long shot shows the face as well as most of his body to show off the bandages on his wrist which indicate he may be getting into fights or boxing rings. The seriousness of his facial expressions connote the seriousness of the actor as well as the direct address of him looking straight at the camera and the topics in the magazine. The zebra coat looks expensive which links to his status and wealth though it contrasts with the bandages on his wrists. The boxing ring in the background has connotations of strength like his last name 'strong'.
Cover lines and Lexis
The cover lines are in tune with wealthier readers who are into fashion. The cover lines talk about sneakers and cars as well as facial surgery to make faces more ' perfect.' It also talks about buying fashionable accessories like bags and shoes.

Raheem Sterling was specifically picked as he showed tremendous courage and respect when speaking out against casual racism in opposing fans and the media. He was born in 1994 in Jamaica and moved to England at only five years old where his interest in football grew though there were mighty challenges. When he was playing for Manchester City in 2018 their team lost and several fans from Manchester and Chelsea online exchanged racial slurs about sterling and other black football players. Him being depicted as an angel suggests he is protecting others from the racism.
Masthead - GQ is the masthead in blocky sans serif capitals, the dark gold reinforces the luxury and individuality of Gq magazine as a whole
Coverlines - 'speak no evil' and ' Westminister has become a living nightmare'. the topics are very controversial and dramatic to fit in with Raheem Sterlings racism.
Anchorage Text - the Anchorage text would be guardian angel to portray Sterling as a protector against racism in football which is further linked to the Black wings and cross tattoo. he is rooting out slurs and guiding the youth - he is regarded as a proppian hero.
Layout - the cover lines are spaced out in an O shape to focus your eyes onto sterling as the text is in lighter colours against the black of his jeans and wings.
image - The wings represent guardian angels to show his role towards footballers and racially insulted people. the colour black shows he has been damaged from past experiences and words but also to show that black is beautiful and powerful. The muted colours in the background ( white, grey) to further make sterling the center piece of the image. This is also a play on his football role as 'winger' where he is extremely fast like he has wings.

Cover Analysis
Media language has been used in many different ways to create different meanings. The main image portrays Malala using a medium close up shot to focus on the details of the picture. She is using direct address with her strong eye contact at the camera implying confidence yet she is smiling slightly which makes her seem welcoming and friendly. Her hijab is a symbol of her culture and wider representation of religion in magazines. The colour red connotes her love and passion for her religion and her belief in equal education in women. It also exudes royalty and high status with the gold jewellery and rings. The gold connotes power and prestige and is meant to make her look royal and empowering. The graceful pose of her hand with the flow of her material makes her look feminine but powerful.
secondly the main cover line and Anchorage is ' Malala - survivor, activist, legend' and is the classic Didot font in Serif. it looks respectful, placed over her forehead to anchor her as a Vogue star. It is in bright silver which has connotations of elegance and importance as it is meant to celebrate her achievements and ambition to make equality better. The triplet of adjectives shows how she has overcome being a victim and taken on a political stance.
The cover lines are in black and white serif. They range on topics from love and fashion and beauty which is stereotypical of a women's magazine but the last cover line speaks of Anthony Joshua , a famous British boxers and one of his fights which might indicate Vogue is trying to influence women to be interested in stereotypical masculine things whilst taking interest of newer readers.

REPRESENTATION
In the past, Muslims have been represented as 70% male, who barely have romantic relationships , are typically straight and do not have any disabilities. Furthermore portrayed as terrorists.
In terms of Ethnicity,Vogue shows diversity of races - as it includes both Jordan
Dunn and Anthony Joshua.
In terms of Gender, Vogue is being diverse as it features both genders as well as mixing the cover lines of boxing with the stereotypically feminine topic of fashion as it is aimed at women.
looks very feminine - flowing , silk headdress, jewellery , hand posture
Explain how both ethnicity and gender have been represented on the cover.
Ethnicity has been represented in an anti stereotypical way as it uses Malala whose religion is Muslim. This challenges the stereotypes as it normally features white celebrities and models- it also mentions Anthony Joshua and Jordan Dunn who are both black. This is not stereotypical for Vogue as it normally referenced at least one white model on each magazine - which means it is becoming more diverse. Her religion is also being represented through her hijab which is wealthy looking to show the importance of her culture. The way it portrays her is different to the normal way media shows Muslims ( 70% male, terrorists, straight). This reinforces the fact that Vogue magazine isn't normally diverse in their representation of ethnicities normally featuring white models.
Gender has been represented in a stereotypical way as Malala is presented as feminine looking. Her hand posture is delicate and flows with her posture. She is wearing makeup and a traditional red lip. The silky material of her headdress and the gold jewellery also indicate her femininity. This would make their mainly woman based audience interested in the cover as it shows a powerful female model who is also viewed as feminine.
Gender has been represented sometimes stereotypical and sometimes anti stereotypical through its audience and what it is influencing. It references both male and females on the cover so is diverse in its models. The cover lines speak about fashion and beauty and love which is commonly used as its audience is majority female. It also talks about boxing stars using the word. ' fighting ' which is anti stereotypical for their audience indicating they are influencing woman to be interested in stereotypically masculine hobbies like sport.
